What should I wear to a costume party?

  • April 11, 2011 1:29 am

I’m 16 years old, female, and fairly geeky. My friends are equally geeky. In fact, the person hosting said party is going to be Princess Peach.
So my problem is that I don’t have a costume! And a costume is required. Absolutely no exceptions. Being 16, I’d like to have something that can be made at least a little sexy (especially so my boyfriend will approve. Haha.)
My original idea was to be a feminine and female version of a Team Fortress 2 class, but none of those worked out well. My next idea was to be a goddess. I had Aphrodite in mind, but she is always naked or wearing boring things (white cloth=boring). Artemis, being awesome, came to mind next, but it was really bothering me that she doesn’t like sex and actually HATES it. Don’t think that will go too well with the whole "sexy" thing I was hoping for. Other goddesses have been difficult to find a costume for or just boring as a whole.
Did I mention I don’t have the ability to buy this from the store? My mom doesn’t approve of the over-sexiness of the store-bought costumes.
I also have a bustier, which is good. Its black, velvet, and has a wide band with roses on it. Makes my chest look very….Renaissance-y. If I could incorporate that it would be excellent. In addition I have a couple tutus (black and white) and a petticoat.
Last little thing. If I can’t dance or sit that is a SERIOUS issue, my mom is fairly handy at sewing, and the geeky-er the better but don’t worry about it too much.
Thank you!

Need EASY way to sew ADJUSTABLE waistband. Making skirts for kids – fabric too heavy for gathered elastic band

  • October 28, 2010 6:13 pm

I’m making kids costumes and the girls skirts are made of a suede material. I don’t think the fabric will gather well for an elastic waitstband, but I want the skirts somewhat adjustable in case they don’t fit each girl exactly. I’d like the ideas I collect to be quick and easy ways to do an adjustable waistband. I’m fairly handy with sewing and I can follow most directions (just provide lots of details!) Thanks.

Renaissance faire costume?

  • September 7, 2010 1:24 am

I’m going to a Ren faire in August and I’m not exactly sure what to do about the costume. I can’t spend hundreds of dollars on it and I’m not good at sewing, so do you know of any online stores where I can get good costumes that don’t cost a lot?
One option of mine is this: I have a top and corset. Here they are:

If I use these, what kind of bottoms and shoes should I get?
Any accessories?
Pictures would be GREAT.
Thanks :)
In the picture, the lop looks brownish…it’s really purple. It’s just a bad picture.

What would an appropriate “favor” gift be to give the Queen and Royal Seamstresses at a Renaissance Faire.

My Daughter (6 yrs old) recently won a costume contest at a Renaissance Faire, and was honored by being a “Princess for a Day”. The Faire people were beyond wonderful, they actually did treat my daughter like a princess. We would like to thank some of the members with a small gift. Several people gave my daughter a "favor" a small token to identify all that see it that you are a friend of the person giving the "favor" The favors were small pins to ware on the costumes. I would like to do the same, but not sure what would be appropriate to this time period and that would show our gratitude. Any ideas? We had thought of flowers, but with the heat and not sure if they would want to carry something extra, did not know if this would be a good idea. I do a lot of sewing and crafts, so making something would not be a problem. Thank you for your ideas and comments.
